Zeeland East’s Reilly Zegunis signs for Wright State

Reilly Zegunis provided the Zeeland East volleyball team with a stellar defensive front, thanks to his blocking ability.

Along the way, the Chix senior has continued to develop her attack to become a versatile threat on the pitch.

Zegunis has reaped the rewards of his transformation. This week, she signed up to play volleyball at Wright State, an NCAA Division I program in Ohio.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity,” Zegunis said. “The culture at Wright State suited me perfectly. I was very impressed with the enthusiasm of the current players. I am excited about a young coaching staff and a competitive program. Their volleyball and athletics facilities were very impressive.”

The 6-foot Zegunis was an all-conference player in the OK Green and a first-team Sentinel All-Area selection. She posted 256 kills, 91 blocks and 30 digs at middle hitter.

East's Reilly Zegunis looks to block the ball during a game against Zeeland West on Tuesday 26th October 2021 at Zeeland East High School.

“Reilly is a fierce competitor. She brings everything to the court and has a burning desire within her to help her team get the job done. She puts up a huge block and challenges opponents with her big, powerful swing. The passion and The fire she plays with is hard to match, she really loves the game and makes her teammates better by pushing them on a daily basis,” said Zeeland East coach Sara Mulder.

Zegunis is looking to keep that trend going in her senior year as she prepares for the NCAA Division I tier.

“I’m going to focus on getting stronger and working to see the game better,” she said. “I can’t wait to be a Raider.”
