Women’s volleyball falls to St. John’s University on final day of Kaiser Classic, 3-0

QUEENS, NY (September 10, 2022) – The Stonehill College women’s volleyball team wrapped up their final day at the Kaiser Classic when they faced host St. John’s University but ended up falling, 3-0 (6-25, 23 -25, 11-25) Saturday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.

The details

Lauren McCloskey and Kaitlyn Watson led the Skyhawks with six wins apiece on Saturday and Mia Berardino and Kristen Joyce each finished with two wins. For the second game in a row, McCloskey finished with six kills and had five or more kills in three games this year. Watson’s six kills tied her career high and she also finished with five or more kills in three games. Both Molly Turner and Delaney Mihelich had another solid outing finishing with eight and seven assists respectively. For Turner, she’s now dished out five or more assists in every game this year and for Mihelich, it’s her eighth consecutive competition with five or more assists. Defensively, McCloskey recorded one block and she’s now finished with at least one block in three games this season.

In the first set, the Skyhawks went out early 3-2 after a Emma Graves kill and two St. John’s attack errors. However, from then on, the Red Storm took over on a 9-1 run and regained the lead, 11-4. Stonehill cut the deficit in half (12-6) after Berardino scored a kill. Despite being out in less than six, St. John’s closed the first set with a 13-0 push. For Stone Hill, jentry allenBerardino and Graves all recorded a kill in the set.

The Red Storm quickly took a 7-2 lead, but despite the wide lead, the Skyhawks cut St. John’s advantage to two (8-6) with a 4-1 rally highlighted by two decisive attacks against Watson. St. John’s kept it at two after an ace of service that made it 15-13, but the purples and whites cut it to one (15-14) after taking advantage of an attacking error from Red Storm . Stonehill continued to trail throughout the set, finding himself three more times, including late when he was 24-23 after a Kristen Joyce kill. Unfortunately, St. John’s stalled the Skyhawks’ momentum to win the second set, 25-23.

St. John’s strong offense continued where it left off in the final set, taking a 15-3 lead. The Skyhawks cut it to 16-6 after killing from Lindsey Peerson and Joyce. The Red Storm didn’t let Stonehill get any closer than that as St. John’s used a 9-5 push to secure the game sweep. In the third set, Kristen DeLorenzo and Turner each had a service ace and McCloskey led the team with two kills.

Stonehill wraps up their nine-game journey by traveling to Saint Anselem College on Friday September 16 for a 6pm game.
