Volleyball gets back on track with 3-1 win


EAST LANSING, Mich. – Making an immediate impact after missing the past two weekends, Alondra Vazquez recorded a game-high 25 game-breaking wins to lead the University of Evansville volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over the State of Chicago during Friday’s Green & White Classic competition inside the Breslin Center.

Vazquez hit an impressive .364 on his return while adding 14 digs and four assists. Giulia Cardona added 18 kills and 18 digs. Kora Ruff set a new career high with 47 assists while Madisyn Steele set a career high with seven assists. Maddie Hawkins also had a standout performance, totaling her best mark of nine digs.

Set 1 – EU 25, CSU 20

Evansville rode a late run to take the win in the first frame. It was the Cougars who took the early lead 4-2 before extending that lead to 9-5. The Aces reduced their lead before Alondra Vazquez took charge. Three straight eliminations highlighted a 7-2 run that put UE up 12-11. Kora Ruff capped the rally with an ace.

Continuing their run, the Aces saw their lead jump to three points (17-14), but Chicago State responded to tie it at 19-19. The pivotal streak came when Madisyn Steele registered a kill to start a 4-0 streak that led to a 25-20 UE win.

Set 2 – CSU 25, EU 13

Things went the Cougars way in Game 2 from the start. After going up by an 8-3 score, CSU continued to roll on their way to a 14-5 lead. Two straight by the Aces cut the deficit to seven points (15-8), but the Cougars retired for the 25-13 decision to tie the game.

Set 3 – EU 25, CSU 20

Out of the gate, it was the Purple Aces who took a 4-1 lead with Vazquez and Kate Tsironis recording wins. After the Cougars cut the lead to 5-4, UE replied with four straight to push the lead to 9-4. Things continued to go the aces way as another ace from Ruff was followed by a kill from Vazquez to make it an 18-11 game.

Chicago State closed the gap in the final moments, but it was another Vazquez kill that was decisive in a 25-20 win that gave UE a 2-1 lead.

Set 4 – EU 25, CSU 20

In a repeat of the third set, Evansville took a 4-1 lead with three kills from Vazquez anchoring the run. EU’s lead was 13-10 when Chicago State rallied with a 5-1 run to move ahead by a score of 15-14. The Aces regained the lead at 17-16 and didn’t let the Cougars take another lead.

Vazquez’s stellar outing continued when his 25e afternoon kill cut the lead to 22-19. Giulia Cardona put the finishing touches on the win, registering a kill to cement a 25-20 nod that gave Evansville a 3-1 win.

On Saturday, the Aces will face Oakland and Michigan State.
