UST completes UAAP men’s beach volleyball treble

MVP Rancel Varga, Jaron Requinton and Efraem Dimaculangan propel UST Tiger Spikers to third straight beach volleyball crown after outlasting NU Bulldogs

MANILA, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas dominated the UAAP Men’s Beach Volleyball Tournament for the third consecutive season after winning the National University 28-26, 21-15 on Sunday, June 5 at the Sands SM By The Bay.

The Tiger Spikers remained the winningest team in the league with six titles, but had to withstand a tough challenge from the Bulldogs in the opening set.

UST won the extended first set on a Rancel Varga free kick that broke a 26-26 stalemate and a big Jaron Requinton block on Pol Salvador.

The Tigers took a 7-2 lead in the second set and then pulled away scoring four straight points for a 16-9 advantage over a Requinton ace.

Playing in front of his family and friends who traveled all the way from Cebu over the weekend, Varga was named tournament MVP for the second season in a row.

“The MVP is just a bonus. Our goal is really to win the championship, the treble,” Varga said in Filipino.

“I am very happy because my family is here and they have witnessed how hard we have worked over the past few years,” he added.

A two-time bronze medalist at the Southeast Asian Games, Requinton was able to get the job done after being lined up late in eliminations to boost UST’s bid to retain the title.

“It was difficult because I was a defender for the national team, but when I entered the UST training bubble I had to adapt as a blocker,” Requinton said in Filipino.

Requinton, who was on the third-man list, praised Efraem Dimaculangan for teaming up with Varga and helping the Tigers win four of the first five games.

La Salle earlier earned a 21-17, 21-17 victory over the University of the Philippines to secure the bronze medal.

It was the Green Spikers’ best finish in the event, with Noel Kampton earning Rookie of the Year honors. –
