The Sachems enjoy that feeling of victory on the volleyball court

The Saugus High School volleyball team have shown a marked improvement over last season in this 2021 campaign.

The Sachems struggled to rack up wins in his final season, which, believe it or not, was in fall 2019.

Saugus captain Madison Niles serves the ball during a volleyball game against host Beverly on Thursday, March 25.

The team was supposed to compete last fall, but the state, due to COVID-19 precautions, only approved volleyball in this Fall Season II, which runs from February through April.

Saugus captain Paige Prezioso passes the ball over the net against host Beverly on Thursday, March 25.

But the Sachems are making the most of things. They are 4-4. Apparently, the long layoffs, delays and routine changes didn’t affect them too much.

Saugus captains Paige Prezioso and Serena Cacciola almost collided as they both attempt to pass the ball over the net against host Beverly on Thursday, March 25.

Second-year varsity coach Gina Vozzella is pleased with the team’s progress as they head into the home stretch of the season.

The team have just suffered a 3-0 loss to Peabody, but they hope to regain their winning streak this week.

Announcer Saugus and Wicked Local Saugus sat down with Vozzella for their review of the season to date.

What do you like about the overall team effort?

The team always do their best and are very dedicated to the sport. Their communication effort has increased enormously since last year.

Saugus' Ryann Moloney prepares the ball against host Beverly on Thursday, March 25.

Where would you like to see the team improve?

The team works to stay positive and keep the momentum going when we’re down on points. They get into their heads and are too hard on themselves.

Saugus' Haley McLaughlin is set to serve the ball against Danvers at Saugus High School on Thursday March 11.

Who are the captains, and what do each of them bring to this year’s club?

Paige Prezioso: Paige is our libero, and that’s exactly what we need defensively. She is always there to do a good search.

Serena Cacciola: She has such a positive presence, and she’s someone you can always count on.

Madison Niles: She’s still able to pump girls and give momentum. She’s excellent both offensively and defensively.

Saugus' Yasmin Nunes keeps his eyes on the ball during a volleyball match against Danvers at Saugus High School on Thursday March 11.

Who besides the individual captains behaves well and how?

Ryann Moloney and Sam Valley are both junior rookies who have really stepped up this year and are our gems in attack.

How is coaching with all COVID-19 protocols?

It’s honestly not as bad as I thought it would be. Girls are used to snuggling and shaking hands, so this was the hardest part for them to do without.

These players have been through a lot after their season ended in the fall. How did they get through all the adversity?

The girls have done a great job with the adjustments we’ve had to deal with, and they’re just happy to be playing this season.
