The Subzero Volleyball Club held its 2nd Annual #1 Youth Beach Tournament on Saturday at the beach volleyball courts at Ghùch Tlâ Community School in Carcross. Twenty athletes between the ages of 12 and 16 took part in the one-day event. The timing was the end of the first five-week session of the summer program. This gave the players the opportunity to put their playing skills and strategies to the test in competition and the parents showed their continued support by coming out to cheer on the children.

Division 1 winners Darwin Murray and Liam Milford had previous experience, having played together in last year’s tournament. Division 2 winners Armand Guilbeault and Jacob Luciano, new to the beach game, were two of the youngest competitors.

Five women’s teams and six men’s teams took part in the adult 17U+ tournament on Sunday. Despite adverse conditions with strong winds off Lake Bennett, play continued. Four 16/17U teams played against the most experienced adults. We learned a lot about the game, especially in terms of playing with the wind. There were a lot of great rallies and although it was a fun tournament the teams played with a competitive spirit.

Tournament winners Channelle Friesen and Greta Corrente (Italy) remained undefeated in the five-team women’s division, as did Angus Clarke and Arcel Siosan who won the six-team men’s division. Other than the Italians, all of the winners were from the Yukon.

The players made this event a success and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Experiencing the game on real sand, from the Carcross area, was a real treat. Many rallies involved chasing the ball and landing on soft sand helped players with this important aspect of the game.

Subzero would like to thank Tait Custom Trailer Sales for providing first place prizes and all of the entrants and their families for coming to Carcross to participate.

Thanks to the Carcross Recreation Board for building the grounds and opening them to the public. Subzero’s summer offer would not be possible without our dedicated beach coaches; thanks to coaches Channelle, Caroline, Frank, Katelyn and Taylor.

Since moving to a year-round club in 2020/21, Subzero has been able to add beach volleyball programming that includes tournaments. Plans are underway for a second tournament later this summer.
