SANTO Tomas won his third consecutive UAAP men’s beach volleyball title, fending off a serious challenge from National University in Sunday’s thrilling final at Sands SM By The Bay.
Rancel Varga and Jaron Requinton proved to be a dazzling pair for the Tiger Spikers, whose breakout act in the first home and away set paved the way for their successful title retention.
Overall, this is Santo Tomas’ sixth title as the league’s winningest beach volleyball team.
“Our goal is to win the championship, yung three rounds in. Prime na lang po’yung MVP“, said Mr. Varga after a stellar performance buoyed by the presence of his family.
With the Santo Tomas dynasty on the line, Mr. Varga got much needed help from veteran Mr. Requinton who was only fielded late in the eliminations as the team’s third player.
Mr Requinton marked his class as a national team veteran highlighted by a decisive block in the first set for a 1-0 cushion. There was no turning back for MM. Varga, Requinton and the Tiger Spikers since then in a more convincing second-set win.
Earlier, La Salle beat the University of the Philippines, 21-17, 21-17, to claim the bronze medal behind rookie of the year Noel Kampton.
