Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann showed off his volleyball skills on Monday during the opening day of a “Khedan Watan Punjab Dian” sports event here. After inaugurating the two-month sporting event, Mann played a volleyball match for around 10-15 minutes at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium here.
Mann, who used to play shooting volleyball, tried his hand at a smashing match of volleyball at the event. With his security staff standing outside the volleyball court, Mann, wearing a tracksuit and backwards cap, positioned himself in the center and showed off his playing prowess. He not only served, but also scored points for his team with his play.
Mann changed his clothes especially for the game. Later, youngsters who played with the chief minister said they were amazed at his skills on the pitch. “He played really well,” one volleyball player said of Mann’s performance. Earlier, the CM inaugurated the sports event ‘Khedan Watan Punjab Dian’.
Addressing a rally after the inauguration, Mann said more than four lakh players in six age groups are expected to compete in the state-level block competitions in 28 sports categories.
He said state-level winners will receive cash prizes totaling Rs 6 crore, and added that these games will be an annual feature of the state’s sports calendar.
“I am delighted to see Punjab happy and the youth in sports,” said the CM, who was accompanied by his wife at the event.
The state government has been working hard to promote sports across the state and channel the energy of young people in a positive way, Mann said.
He said these games are a good step in that direction as they will provide a platform for gamers to show off their talent.
Mann claimed that it will also help the state government to identify players’ strengths and weaknesses, which will help them prepare for national and international events in the future. Mann said Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, the Punjab Sports Minister, deserves kudos for hosting the games.
It is a great pride for the whole state that these games are taking place in every nook and cranny of Punjab, he said.
The CM said the Aam Aadmi Party government was working on an aggressive campaign to produce maximum number of trained sportsmen and to have more Punjabi players in Indian contingents for international events.
Punjab is full of sporting talent and the state government will spare no effort to enable players to compete and win Olympic medals for India, he said.
He also remembered hockey magician Major Dhyan Chand on his birthday and told young players to be inspired by the hockey legend on that day.
He assured the players that they will benefit from state-of-the-art infrastructure and world-class facilities.
