Pavan, Humana-Paredes best Brazilian duo in beach volleyball

On Friday, Canadian beach volleyball stars Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes added another match to the win column at the Latvia Elite 16 tournament.

The duo beat Brazilians Andressa Ramalho and Vitoria Rodrigues 21-16, 21-13 in the final pool match in Jurmala, Latvia.

Toronto’s Humana-Paredes and Kitchener, Ont., native Pavan outshot the Brazilians in attack and blocks by a 9-4 margin while tied on service.

The Canadians went into the match having gone 1-1 on Thursday, beating Brazilians Maria Antonelli and Fernanda Alves in their opener but later losing to the Dutch duo of Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam.

Friday’s win puts the Canadians second in Group B, giving them the chance to make the quarterfinals, something they missed in their last competition.

Pavan and Humana-Paredes failed to advance to the knockout stage at last week’s Elite 16 tournament in Ostrava after finishing the group with just one win and two losses.
