Laguna Blanca and Bishop Diego sweep openers of CIF Volleyball Qualifiers | Sports


Laguna Blanca swept Oxnard in a CIF-SS Division 3 men’s volleyball opener at Merovick Gym on Thursday. The scores were 25-13, 26-24, 25-19.

Thomas Couvillion led a balanced offense for the Owls with 14 kills. Freddie Russell had 10 kills and Miles Sedlin paced the defense with 10 digs.

“We got off to a good start, it was a great playoff win for us,” Laguna Blanca coach Jason Donnelly said. “We were able to weather the storm as Oxnard played some pretty solid volleyball. Thomas played his best offensive game of his career, hitting 0.565% with 14 kills for the game.”

Setter Jack Shiebler dished out 39 assists, served three aces, had two kills and four digs.

The Owls travel to Villa Park for a second-round game on Saturday.

“We’ve been training to a really high standard recently, and we’re looking forward to getting back to the gym tomorrow in preparation for our next game on Saturday,” Donnelly said.

Bishop Diego sweeps Segerstrom

Kai Morphy had 16 kills, two blocks and five digs to lead the Bishop Diego boys’ volleyball team to a 26-25, 25-23, 25-22 sweep at Segerstrom in Santa Ana on Thursday in a CIF Division 4 first round match. .

The Cardinals advance to a second-round game against second-seeded Portola.

Braylon Katers led an aggressive defensive effort with 11 digs and added eight kills. Liam Flood played stellar up front, giving the Cardinals the balance on the right side with six kills, one block and four digs, coach Dillan Bennett said.

“What a time to put on a full game,” exclaimed Bennett. “The guys stuck to our game plan and played as clean a game as they have done all year. Segerstrom was well coached and the scores showed how competitive the game was.

“I thought Austin Carty had an effective offense, and we were able to control the serve and pass game pretty well. We’ll have our work cut out for us this weekend in Portola.”
