Volleyball star Jaja Santiago has completed the 14-player roster of the Philippines women’s national volleyball team which is heading to Brazil for a training camp.
Santiago, who plays for Ageo Medics in the Japan Volleyball League, met the team during a stopover to join fellow national team members in preparation for the Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, in May.
The former MVP and PVL champion will once again team up with Aby Maraño, Alyssa Valdez, Mylène Paat, Majoy Baron, Ces Molina and Dawn Macandili for the Philippines.
Also included in the lineup are Iris Tolenada, Kat Arado, Kat Tolentino, Dell Palomata, Riri Meneses, Jema Galanza and Kyle Negrito.
Santiago is coming off the top tackler honors in Japan’s 2021-22 V.League Women’s Division 1 season.
The middle tackle has 103 blocks in her 33 games this season, by far the most in the league. She averages 0.81 blocks per set.
“I would like to dedicate this award to my family, my coaches and my teammates,” Santiago said in comments posted by his club. “This award is only possible with everyone’s support.”
Along with leading the league in blocks, Santiago also ranked among the best in hitting percentage. She connected 48.2% of her hits this season, fourth in the league.
The Filipino team will hold a three-week camp in Barueri, a municipality in the state of São Paulo.
The team will be coached by Jorge Edson Souza de Brito and Odjie Mamon, as well as Grace Antigua and Raffy Mosuela.
The SEA Games will take place from May 12 to 23 in Vietnam.
