Javier and Joaquin finished 2nd in their group after picking up wins over Tuvalu and Cyprus. They beat Gambia in the quarter-finals but lost to Canada in the semi-finals, putting them in contention for bronze.

England 1-2 Canada

The Bello Brothers battle like lions against the 2018 Games silver medalists and win the first set in convincing fashion.

But Canada rallied and stormed back into the match, winning the 2nd and 3rd deciding sets.

Joaquin said: “In the first set they made a lot of mistakes. I feel like in the second set we couldn’t control more. We started to hit more towards the defender, we got a little afraid of the block.

“Daniel [Dearing] was amazing at net today and, for a second, I think he entered our minds. We were a little scared, a little hesitant to hit full force. They played an incredible game.”

He added: “We will put it [the defeat] behind us, focus on the things we can do, which is putting more pressure on the serve, staying together, being less afraid of our opponents and being more aggressive.”
