Gaels have players in place to make up for graduation losses

Shelton Boys’ Volleyball is well stocked for short and long term success.

“The kids are very excited to play this season. I had 16 freshmen for the team, a few juniors and a new sophomore. I was blown away,” Shelton coach LeAnne Bianchine said. “I had to make cuts. I hate making cuts, but it meant so many kids were interested in the program. It was beautiful to see.”

Shelton graduated six seniors, five starters, from last year’s 12-4 squad that advanced to the CSC semifinals.

All is not lost.

“My setter is senior captain John Sabovik, who established JV last year. He worked really hard. My other captain, Alessandro Mallozzi, is my outside hitter who also played last year,” Bianchine said. “I still have my libero, Nate Foss, so he’s used to that position.”

The depth gives Bianchine options.

She said, “Our front line hitters can play all the way through a rotation. Because I have four batters, I try to make sure they all have equal playing time. Jase Co is a senior backline specialist. I can hook it up for them throughout a game.

The first row offers flexibility.

“Our two senior middlemen are Matt Diaz and Jubei D’Amato. My juniors are Tim Hilser, Tommy Kopec and Evan Murrell,” Bianchine said. midfielder. They are versatile. I can play four outside or on the right. Tim can play all three, outside and right midfield.

The depth is good. Bianchine feels she can change it and switch to hot hand.

“Evan has a big block so he’ll play mostly on the right side, but we have a second set of hands there with Tommy. We’ll have a good rotation,” Bianchine said. “We’re solid on serve. Our offense is good. We need to work on our blockage, close the blockage.

“They’re very hungry, they’re excited,” she said. “After being knocked out in the first round of States last year, they want to stay there longer, which I love.”

Shelton opens tomorrow with a visit to Pomperaug (5:30 a.m.) and is on the road at Brookfield (4:15 a.m.) on Wednesday. He hosts Amity on Friday at 6.
