DS girls stumble onto the volleyball court to visit Carroll | Sports

Denison-Schleswig hosted Carroll High in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night in Denison, with the visiting Tigers earning a 3-1 win over the Monarchs.

DS won the first game, 25-22, but Carroll then won the last three games by the scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-22, as the Monarchs fell to 3-12 on aggregate in the matches and 9-30 in matches. .

Carroll had a total of 46 wins on the night compared to just 20 for DS.

Ashlyn Herrig led all DS servers in scoring 19 of 21 with two aces.

Kaylie Baker also went 18 of 19 with two aces. Claire Leinen was 12 out of 13.

Kaitlyn Bruhn had all nine serves, while Anna Wiges and Whitlee Auen were both 7 of 10 from the service line for the Monarchs.

Bruhn and Addison Inman each had seven wins to lead DS.

Leinen added three kills. Baker had two and Maria Cardenas one.

Baker paced the Monarchs with 16 assists.

Wiges had a team-high 19 digs. Bruhn added 12 recoveries. Leinen had 11 digs and Herrig 10. Baker also had six digs over the four games.

Inman had two solo blocks. Bruhn had two solo blocks and one assist block. Leinen finished with a solo block and a block assist, as did Cardenas.

“We came out strong and got the first set, but kind of lost our mental focus and Carroll was able to take advantage of that,” Denison-Schleswig coach McKenzie Mich commented.

“The difference? We just had too many little mistakes that hurt us. In fact, we played better for the most part, but as a team we just had a slow transition to base when we didn’t. didn’t have the ball,” she added.

“Carroll had a good outside hitter and she was the one who hurt us for most of the game.”

“The Game 1 victory was DS’s first victory over Carroll since 2016, according to Mich.

“I think we had Carroll on his heels a bit after the first set. The game turned in Carroll’s favor after that and we didn’t respond the way we should,” Mich said.

For Carroll, Shay Sinnard had a night with 14 kills and 10 digs.

Madison Thornock had nine kills and six digs for the visitors.

Katelyn Aden contributed eight kills, three digs and three blocks, while Camryn Schable finished with eight kills, four digs, three blocks and one assist for the Tigers.

Carroll won back-to-back DS Junior Girls’ Varsity games, winning 25-16, 25-15.

Elli Heiden and Quinlan Bygness each had six serves for DS in the match.

Mayah Slater led DS with three wins. Taylor Totten added two kills.

Lauryn Turin has had six assists.

Heiden led with 12 digs in the game. Bygness added eight digs.

Torino also had a solo block for the Monarchs on the night.
