Boys Volleyball: Payne Tech Wins NJTAC Tournament Title

The Lions are finally champions. In a strong straight-set performance, Payne Tech defeated Gloucester Tech 25-10, 29-27 for the New Jersey Technical Athletic Conference championship on May 25 in Newark, marking the program’s first title.

Yann Gomes was named the tournament’s most valuable player after a stat line of seven wins, seven digs and five aces in the title game. This spring, the senior outside hitter has 136 kills, 136 digs and 27 aces.

Luis Carvalho and Diogo Correia have been named in the All-Tournament Squad. Correia had eight digs (317 in total in 2022) and two assists against Gloucester Tech while Carvalho had three kills, 10 digs, 20 assists and a pair of aces. Carvalho leads the team with 522 assists this season, adding 165 digs.

In the match, Jonathan Espinal contributed eight kills and two blocks. Gabriel Mejia and Jerry Mendez scored four wins apiece alongside Davin Aguilar’s three wins.

Payne Tech improves to 17-8 with the win. Gloucester Tech drops to 13-7.
