Athlete Baldwin Panther was strong in two sports

BALDWIN — Duane Roberts coaches both volleyball and bowling at Baldwin and had the good fortune to coach junior Rachel Carpenter in both.

It was in bowling that Carpenter caught a lot of luck. She finished high enough in the region to qualify for the state competition.

It’s been a unique season for 2021-22 Female Athlete of the Year Baldwin Panther.

Carpenter was one of 60 bowlers who qualified for the 2022 State Finals at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek. She had to enter the top 16 of the qualifying round to qualify for the qualifying block, but she was 53rd with a 766.

She played six games with scores of 115, 120, 145, 132, 154 and 100.

“Rachel stepped up (in volleyball) and went from being a defensive player to playing all the rounds and filling in for a lot of players who were out due to illness,” Roberts said. “She started playing mid-strike and other positions as well, including mid-back. His services have improved. She had a great year.

“I’m glad she bowled and I’m waiting to see what the start of the year will be like. In bowling, she went to state as a runner-up and was one of our first in a while to make it to state. I had other girls on the team.

It was Carpenter’s first year of bowling.

“She took third place in the conference,” Roberts said. “But she took eighth at regionals to go state.”
