AL.com presents high school volleyball season by classification

The 2022 AHSAA high school volleyball season begins today with a reclassification that mixes up some of the best teams in the state.

AL.com previews each class below.

CLASS 7A

TEAM TO BEAT: McGill-Toolen

The Dirty Dozen features a strong line-up, including senior A-List Anna Grace Sparks as well as junior average Emma Moore, a committed Auburn and Chelsea Daffin.

CONTAINERS: Spain Park, Thompson

Spain Park just won its first state championship and has plenty of firepower with senior A-List Emily Breazeale at outside hitter while Brooklyn Allison is one of the best liberos in the state and Lily Johnson leads the offensive.

Thompson is still talented and A-List Katilyn Grant with Cydney Mitchell provide the firepower while Olivia Kelly starts the offense.

CLASS 6A

AHSAA Volleyball State Championship

TEAM TO BEAT: Bayside Academy

The perennial champion Bayside continues his rise in the standings after two consecutive Class 5A titles added to the state-record 30 championships, 20 consecutive. Junior setter Blakeley Robbins has arms in junior outside hitter Maysie Douglas and sophomore midfielder Misty Kate Smith.

CONTAINERS: Mountain Brook, Fort Spaniard

Senior libero Anna Frances Adams leads the Mountain Brook defense while a strong junior class includes setter Hannah Parant and midfielder Alice Garzon.

Fort Spanish senior Bailey Hope at outside hitter is strong up front while juniors Alexis Belarmino at setter and Elyse McKinney at outside hitter are key,

TEAMS TO WATCH: Homewood, Hartselle, Pelham

CLASS 5A

TEAM TO BEAT: Westminster Christian

Rising from last year’s Class 4A title, Westminster offers a talented senior class that includes outside hitters Calli Tanielu and Brianna Tinsley, and average Meg Paparella.

CONTAINERS: Montgomery Academy, Jasper

Both teams, Montgomery Academy (up from Class 4A) and Jasper (up from Class 6A) have veteran head coaches who know how to win.

TEAM TO WATCH: Alexandria, Christian Providence

CLASS 4A

TEAMS TO BEAT: Trinity

Trinity beat Montgomery Catholic for the Class 3A title last season, but both are moving up to Class 4A this year. Sarah Dubberly coaches Trinity while her husband Sellers coaches Montgomery Catholic.

Setter and A-List Addison Cherry along with midfielder Emma Moody lead Trinity’s attack while libero Isabel Hill is key in defense.

CLASS 3A

Saint-Luc Volleyball

List A senior Haley Patterson leads a strong St. Luke team that also includes senior setter Lexi Garside and junior libero Cammie Waite.

CONTAINERS: Plainview, Prattville Christian

TEAMS TO WATCH: Danville, Geraldine

CLASS 2A

AHSAA Volleyball State Championship

TEAM TO BEAT: GW long

The Rebels have fallen to Class 2A champion Addison (upgraded to Class 1A this season) in the past two seasons, including the 2020 title match, after winning the 2019 championship. Emma Claire Long is a force on the front while Emmaline Hughes leads the defense.

CONTAINERS: Hatton, Donoho

TEAMS TO WATCH: Sand Rock, Winston County

CLASS 1A

TEAM TO BEAT: Addison

Addison has 13 previous titles – two consecutive in Class 2A – in either Class 2A or Class 1A and is returning to Class 1A this season. A-List setter Gracie Manley leads the attack.

CONTAINERS: Spring garden, Sweet

TEAM TO WATCH: Pleasant welcome, Athens Bible

TEAM TO BEAT: Glenwood

CONTAINERS: Macon East, Edgewood Academy
