As early as 1967 the Giesecke & Gevrient company
contacted the Munich organizing committee. This company had already produced
the tickets for the 1936 games in Berlin, and was designing the tickets for
the 1968 Mexico games. In order to avoid the falsification of the tickets,
the company recommended the use of special watermarks in the security paper
(with metal threads), which were then used for the first time. Thanks to
these security precautions no counterfeit tickets appeared. The watermark (five Olympic rings and the year 1972), a strong metal thread in field 3 and a “Guilloche” used normally for banknotes in field 4 secured the high quality standards of these tickets. The tickets were produced in DIN A 6 format. The front side had four different fields: Field 1 (on the left hand side) was blue (with the exception of the opening and closing ceremony). It showed the name “Munich” and the place of the competition. A total of 23 venues can be identified. Field 2 was white and shows the five Olympic rings, the logo of the games as well as the logo of the different sports (21 different logos were used). Field 3, which is the biggest o the four, shows the date, time and a schematic representation of the venue. A total of 36 different venues exists. The Volleyball venue (Volleyballhalle Olympiapark) was identified by grey color. Field 4 shows a clock with the time of the event, as well as information about the exact location of the seat (in French, English and German) and the price of the ticket, followed by a code number, identifying each individual event. The color of field 4 depends on the weekday of the event. Seven colors were available, according to the following schedule: Sunday – grey Monday – yellow Tuesday – blue Wednesday – brown Thursday – turquoise Friday – green Saturday – violet The reverse side of the tickets showed a schematic representation of the venue and advertisements. Some tickets were overprinted (with black color): these were free tickets for students (“Schüler – Freikarte”, specially for events scheduled for the morning), for special guests (“Ehrenkarte”), and tickets for the press (“Presse”). Other tickets were overprinted in red color: Again tickets for special guests (“Ehrenkarte”), for participants of the games (“Aktive”), general free tickets (“Freikarte”), tickets for the judges (“Jury”) and for the youth camp (“Olympisches Jugendlager”). Some tickets could not be sold, because it was impossible to watch certain events from different locations, sometimes because of the use of television cameras etc. They exist with a special remark (“Sichtbehinderte Plätze – unverkäuflich”). |
