JAPANESE FAN LETTERS - OLYMPIC GAMES 1972, MUNICH

added on October 10th, 2006

It seems that before and during the Olympic Volleyball tournament at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich a support campaign for the Japanese Volleyball players was organized in their country. Here are three examples of letters sent from Japanese fans to their idols at the Munich games.

Thanks to the excellent translation service of the ATA (American Topical Society) I can present the translations of the three Japanese letters.
If you have any comments or additional information, please let me know, clicking here:

LETTER I

This letter was sent from Ms Miyuki Kamiya from Sizuoka, Japan, to the Japanese Volleyball player Yoshihide Fukao in Munich, Germany, on Aug 28th, 1972.

The Japanese Volleyball team that won the Olympic Gold medal at the 1972 games:
Katsutoshi NEKODA
Kenji KIMURA
Yoshihide FUKAO (letters I and II)
Jungo MORITA,
Tadayoshi YOKOTA
Seiji OKO
Kenji SHIMAOKA (letter III)
Yuzo NAKAMURA
Masayuki MINAMI
Tetsuo SATO
Yasuhiro NOGUCHI
Tetsuo NISHIMOTO

Dear Mr. Yoshihide Fukao,

How is your tournament going ? Are you in your best condition ? I have been watching you on TV. You are very good looking. Especially I like your special pose. According to [book title] by Morita, you also mastered this method. I saw on TV “Road to Munich”, coach Morita overcame his difficulties. You also are shown to have advanced from bottom to top. I saw how you had gotten better (from book, etc.) and I became your fan. I hope that all the Japanese athletes will bring back gold medals. I wish you and your volleyball team will do their best. I will support you. Sorry for my childish writing.

From Miyuki

LETTER II

This letter was sent to the same player on Aug 23rd, 1972.

High Mr. Fukao,

I wish you to win Olympic gold medal. Don’t get defeated by Soviet Union. I will support you from Japan. I know you will do your best.
Hurrah for whole Japan. Do best you can. Whole Japanese is being supported.
From Kyoko

LETTER III

This letter was sent from Ms Ikuko Sakuraba from Yokohama, Japan, to the Japanese Volleyball player Kenji Shimaoka on Aug 20th, 1972. It is the funniest one of the three. Who knows if Ikuko ever made the scarf ?

Mr. Shimaoka,

I want you to get a gold medal.
I regret I fell in love with you. It is not a bad feeling, because when I read “Josei Jisin” (female weekly magazine) article about you, it showed how you always carried a photograph to Munich of the person you will marry in 2 – 3 years. This disappointed me. I dreamed of standing by you. It is very hard for me to look at you and your team practicing. At one time you took my hand in my dream. It flabbergasted me. In my dream I said I am not a man. Don’t hold my hand. But your hand was very warm and large. After I dreamed of this, I became a fan of yours. I am in love with you. I have to forget about this pretty soon. If I have to forget about you, I am fearful of falling in love with you.
Now Tokyo is in winter and very cold. I am going to make a scarf for you. May I knit a scarf for you ? What kind of girlfriend do you have ? Is she cute, etc. ? I wish you luck. Does Mr. Morita have a girlfriend and Yokota ?
If you never have a girlfriend it is very strange, isn’t it ? I will forget about you completely. However, I want you to be very happy. I will send you fan letters. Please answer my fan letters. You can reject my offer of a scarf. If you want it, though, I still will knit it. I am waiting for your answer. Lastly, I wish you win a gold medal. I pray for this every day.

I am waiting for your return mail. I am sorry I write you this impolite letter. Don’t hold that against me.
