Dear friends !
During the twelve months of 2006 I will present interesting items of the
twelve oldest Volleyball stamps. I hope you will be
interested in them. Today we continue with the seventh part (July), a stamp
from
Czechoslovakia (a country that does not exist in that for any more). If you have any interesting covers or other material to
enrich this site, please let me know.

The seventh Volleyball stamp issued worldwide comes from
Czechoslovakia. It was issued on September 15th, 1953 as a
general sport issue together with two other stamps, depicting athletism
(javellin) and motor bike racing. It is a commemorative stamp with a face value of
30 Heller. It has comb perforation 11 1/2 and no watermark. It was printed in
recess printing (Intaglio), designed by J. Kovář and engraved by L.
Jirka. 350.000 sets were printed.

A proof with the engraver's signature
is known. |

This time I can present two philatelically inspired
covers, one Maximum card and a Maximum card. |
|
 |
This is a First Day Cover (FDC) which
was not postally used. It was cancelled on September 15th, 1953 with a
cancel commemorating the motorbike championship. It bears all three stamps
issued in the set on that day. |

 |
This is the same cover is our first
example, but it was sent as an airmail letter to Holland. |
 |
This presentation card from the
Czechoslovakian postal authorities shows al three stamps issued on that
day. |
 |
The Maximum card on which our stamp
was used shows an action picture of an early Volleyball game. It was
cancelled on July 13th, 1954 and commemorates the 1st
Regional Spartakiad Games 1954, organized by DSD (= Voluntary Sport
Organisation). |
