Today I want to present to you the oldest item related to the sport of Volleyball that I have in my collection. It is a cover sent on March 30th, 1895 from Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, to nearbey Springfield. Holyoke is the place where Volleyball, then called "Mintonette", was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895. So this cover was sent in the year of this revolutionary invention from the place where it was invented. Curously, it was sent to Springfield, where one year later, in 1896, the first official Volleyball match was played at the YMCA. In this occasion the name was changed from "Mintonette" to Volleyball.

Frontside of the cover sent from Holyoke to Springfield. It is an entire (postal stationery cover)
cancelled with the local Holyoke - cancel as well as with a fancy cancel showing a number "1".
As you can see, the cancel was aplied at 8.00 pm.
Reverse side of the entire, with arrival cancel "Springfield", dayed March 31st, 1895.
The cancel was aplied at 1:00 am, which means that it only took five hours to get from Holyoke to Springfield.
This would not be surprising, because the distance between the two cities is only about 14 kms;
the surprising fact is that a 1:00 am cancel was applied to this entire.
