THE FIRST FDC ...

this ITEM OF THE MONTH was provided by PIET VAN DEN BERG, Netherlands
text from Gunter Pilz

This is the oldest First Day Cover that exists in Volleyball Philately. It shows the first Volleyball stamp issued by ROMANIA on Aug 5, 1945. The next Volleyball stamp issue ocurred more than two years later in Japan. Unfortunately the shown cover was not postally used, but still it is a historical document.
The Volleyball stamp used on this cover was issued together with four other sports stamps, in two versions. First there is the red and perforate version (shown here), then there was also a green and imperforate version. Both of them were issued in sheetlets of nine stamps.
