| Early in 2003 Vic
Manikian submitted an article "1940, Celebrating the XIIth Olympiad", a
study of the postal material relating to the initial award of the Games of
the XIIth Olympiad to Tokyo. This was published in Torch Bearer in May 2003
(volume 20). Responses from the members of the Society of Olympic Collectors bewteen publication of this initial article and 2006 were used as the basis of further articles, and inspired production of a consolidated publicated, titled "1940 TOKYO THE GAMES OF THE XIIth OLYMPIAD" as well as the creation of this webpage. All this was possible thanks to the generosity of members in sharing their research. Neither the booklet nor this webpage can make any claim of completeness, but it does demonstrate the expansion of knowlegde through cooperation and enthusiasm. As an example of the expansion of knowledge, the May 2003 artcile listed all NYK covers recorded by "Japanese Philately" - a list published netween 1992 and 2001, which included xx items. The consolidated list in this publication includes yy covers. Contributions for the publication in Torch Bearer with the aim of further expanding knowledge of the postal commemoration of the Games of the XIIth Olympiad would be welcomed. Following the withdrawal of Tokyo as host of the Games of the XIIth Olympiad, the Games were awarded to Helsinki - postal material for Helsinki is not considered in this publication. |
