NYK SHIPPING LINE POSTCARDS with separation text
Following the selection of Tokyo as host, the separation between message and address sections on the backs of N.Y.K. postcards had text added to promote the XII Olympic Games: XII OLYMPIAD - TOKYO 1940.
It should be noted that cards of the same design (or mirror-images) bear different identifying text. The same design was often used for 'sister' ships, or minor changes such as the cloud formations made.
Following the withdrawal of Tokyo as host, remaining stocks of postcards were overprinted with a decorative screen to obliterate the Olympic text.
The density of ink used for obliteration of the Olympic text is variable, the results range from a light printing alloqing the text to be easily read, to a heavy printing where the Olympic text is almost undetectable.

The N.Y.K. fleet contained a number of groups of 'sister' ships, built to the same designs. The postcards of the vessels were produced from artwork, and the individual artwork of a type of vessel has been used with minor changes or manipulation (clouds in the sky, mirror image, etc.) to represent more than one ship, by adding a unique name and details of a specific vessel. For some postcards, it would appear that the colour 'generic' card may have been printed as a bulk lot with the individual ship details added as a secondary process.

NYK ARTIST DRAWN POSTCARDS with separation text
The following four postcards are examples of the artist renditions of interior scenes on the N.Y.K. Line vessels. Each of these designs appear with the "XII OLYMPIAD - TOKYO 1940" text as divider

The fifth postcard does not seem the be from the usual style / designs used to promote the XII Olympiad. It seems to be an advertising postcard sold or given out by the N.Y.K. Ship Line of Japan and it is marked "XII OLYMPIAD - TOKYO 1940" on the back.
